Visiting and Adjunct Professor

Visiting Professor

A Visiting Professor normally has held, is on leave from, or is retired from a similar academic appointment at another institution. Occasionally, other qualifications may make a Visiting appointment appropriate. A Visiting Professor is expected to perform duties similar to those required of the Professor series. A Visiting appointment is made for one year or less, and the total period of service may not exceed two years, with the exception of mathematics programs, which allow a three-year total for Visiting Assistant Professors.

Adjunct Professor

Affiliated faculty of UC Merced. An Adjunct Professor holds a renewable temporary appointment, typically for a term of two to three years depending on rank and step. Appointees must adhere to the same academic personnel procedures and standards of excellence as those in the Professor series, and are expected to contribute to the research, teaching and service endeavors of the campus.
