Unit 18 Lecturers
Non-Senate faculty, or Unit 18 Lecturers, provide critical instructional services to the campus. Appointees have full or partial responsibility for the instruction of approved regular University courses for campus credit. They may also perform other types of instruction-related work. Non-Senate faculty members are represented by the American Federation of Teachers, and all terms of employment and policies regarding the Lecturer series are governed by the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Lecturers Unit (IX). Appointees are not expected to engage in research, are not members of the Academic Senate, and may not be enrolled as a student on any UC campus. They are key members of the educational community at UC Merced.
To be considered for appointment, candidates must submit an application, with required materials, through AP Recruit. The recruitment process provides the information and materials needed to assess each candidate for a non-senate faculty appointment. Unit 18 Lecturers already appointed on campus must submit a Statement of Interest in Reappointment (SOI) in order to be considered for a reappointment without reapplying through AP Recruit. See the linked form for the schedule for submitting the SOI.
Pre-Six Lecturer
During the first 12 semesters (or six years) of a Lecturer's service to the same Unit at UC Merced, they are known as a "pre-six Lecturer." Pre-six appointments are temporary and self-terminating. An initial appointment is typically for one year. Reappointments, if any, are typically for two years (first reappointment) or three years (second reappointment). Prior to a first reappointment, a Lecturer will have a Pre-Six Assessment, and a Pre-Six Academic Review will be conducted prior to any second reappointment. Reviews are intended to ensure that UC standards of teaching effectiveness are maintained. An appointment of any percentage time during the academic year counts towards the 12 semesters of service credit. Summer Session and without-salary appointments do not count toward service credit.
Continuing Lecturer
Lecturers who reach their 12th semester of service to the same school, department or unit at UC Merced, shall undergo an Excellence Review to determine eligibility for Continuing status. If standards of excellence are met, and if there is an instructional need for their continued services, a Continuing appointment will be offered, to commence at the start of the 13th semester. A Continuing Appointment does not create entitlement to tenure or security of employment, nor does it guarantee specific teaching assignments; however, Continuing Lecturers have seniority within their schools, departments or units and are not required to reapply for appointment through AP Recruit nor must they continue to submit Statements of Interest. Advanced Continuing Lecturers may request a review for Senior Continuing Lecturer status.
