Established by F. Warren and Chris Hellman in 1995, the Hellman Fellows Fund aims to support the research efforts of faculty assistant professors who show great promise for significant recognition and distinction in their research.
The maximum allotted for this annual award is $50,000. Proposals are accepted each Spring, and the deadline varies each year. Proposals must be submitted by individual faculty members themselves. Applicants may receive only one Hellman Fellows award in a lifetime.
Applications are limited to 3 pages maximum, and should be clearly written. The goals and scope of the work should be accessible to non-experts. All applications will undergo a rigorous review by a panel of faculty members who may or may not be specialists in the relevant field of study (one faculty from each school, each a former Hellman Fellow award recipient).
Potential impact, innovation, and quality of the research proposed are key criteria for selection. Awards are made without regard to the apparent timeliness or popularity of the area of study and without reference to applicant background. Preference may be given to projects not already well-supported by other funding sources.
Awards may be used for any research-related expense, such as research assistants, equipment, or travel, but not faculty summer salary. There is no overhead charged to this award. Recipients are expected to use the funds within one year, and are required to spend all funds before they are granted tenure.
