Over a span of more than fifty years, a trust provided by former UC Regent Edward A. Dickson has grown from $207,381 to over $2 million. Dickson stipulated that the earnings from this endowment would stimulate and recognize emeriti for their continuing service, teaching, and research. In 2003, UCOP split the fund into 10 portions, enabling each UC campus to offer an annual $10,000 award.
UC Merced now welcomes applications for the 2025-2026 Edward A. Dickson Award and will award an emeritus/ae $10,000 to support an ongoing or new project in teaching, research, or service. Currently retired professors with emeritus/ae status are eligible to apply.
Applications should include:
- Title page including the title of the proposal, applicant’s name, department affiliation, and a 100-word abstract of the proposed project
- Project description of one to two pages length, including the applicant’s past involvement or qualifications in the area. The project can involve teaching, research, or service.
- A budget indicating the breakdown of the funding request
- Short curriculum vitae of no more than two pages length
- Applications are due by April 2nd and can be mailed to VPAP@ucmerced.edu
Applications will be reviewed by a committee of current UC Merced faculty, selected by the Vice Provost for Academic Personnel (or designee). The finalist will be selected by the committee, reviewed by the VPAP and recommended to the EVC/Provost for final approval by the end of each Spring Semester. Funds must be used by the end of June, 2026.
