The Office of the Vice Provost for the Faculty works to maintain the excellence of UC Merced's faculty and academic staff, in research, teaching, and service. It is our job to help ensure that our campus serves the State of California and broader community by providing a world class education, advancing knowledge, and making high impact discoveries.

As Interim Vice Provost for the Faculty, it is my responsibility to ensure that academic personnel actions, including appointments, promotions, and advancements, are handled fairly, in a timely manner, and in accordance with University of California policies and standards. In doing so, we are mindful of campus goals related to equity, diversity, and inclusion. We also oversee matters concerning faculty conduct and compliance with UC policies. Our office also attends to faculty well-being and retention. We develop and oversee new initiatives to boost faculty productivity and ensure their well-being, including programs for mentoring early career faculty and fostering good work-life balance.

My PhD is from UC Santa Cruz, and my postdoctoral training was at Stanford University. I have published over 100 articles on communication and cognition; received awards for research, mentoring, and teaching; served on an associate editor of a linguistics journal; and was a standing member of a NIH study section. Currently I sit on the governing board for the Cognitive Science Society.

I am the McClatchy Chair in Communications and Professor of Cognitive Science. I came to UC Merced in 2004 as Founding Faculty, and it is my pleasure to serve as Interim Vice Provost for the Faculty in 2018-19.
